Types of Dump Trucks and Their Project Uses

Article 5 of 14Englishالنسخة العربية

Introduction

The dump truck or tipper is the bloodstream of material movement on site. An excavator may be fast, but if the dump trucks are too few or unsuitable for the haul distance and payload, productivity collapses. The right truck is selected based on material type, hauling distance, and dumping area.

Common types

Common options include 6x4 and 8x4 dump trucks with different bodies, tipper trailers for some applications, and half-lorries for smaller work. In Kuwait, common chassis include Mercedes Actros/Arocs, MAN, Hino, Volvo, Sinotruk, and SITRAK. Actros is available in 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 configurations with a wide horsepower range [S9].

Capacity and usage

Body volume does not always equal legal payload. Sand, aggregate, rock, and debris have different densities. Do not load only by volume; consider density and permitted payload. Large dump trucks are useful on long hauls and open sites but can be a problem in narrow streets or private housing projects.

Productivity calculation

Productivity equals number of trips multiplied by net payload and working hours. Add loading time, site exit, dumping, return, and waiting time. A 20 ton excavator may require 4–6 dump trucks depending on distance so it does not wait idle.

Dump truck typeUseOperating note
6x4Medium sites and normal roadsGood balance between payload and maneuvering
8x4More material on open sitesNeeds larger turning area
Tipper trailerLong distances and large quantitiesMore affected by permits and roads
Half-lorryLight debris and tight sitesLower payload, easier access
