How to Choose the Right Excavator for Your Project

Introduction

The excavator is one of the most commonly misselected machines in small and medium projects. A contractor may ask for a “big excavator” without defining depth, soil type, access, or loading needs, while the owner may send whichever unit is available. The result can be weak productivity, higher diesel consumption, and safety issues.

Excavator size

Mini excavators from 3 to 8 tons suit tight areas, light utilities, landscaping, and small trenching. The 20–22 ton class, such as CAT 320 and Komatsu PC200, is suitable for general excavation and loading in housing and road projects. Boom, stick, bucket, and attachments

Do not judge the excavator alone. Check the boom, stick, bucket, and attachments. A breaker is needed for demolition or rock, a rock bucket for hard material, a ditch-cleaning bucket for shaping and wide trenches, and long reach for extended reach applications. The wrong breaker can damage pins, bushings, and boom structure instead of breaking the material.

Questions before ordering

Define digging depth, trench width, material type, lowbed access, presence of water or services, operating hours, and whether dump trucks are needed. If the job is excavation and loading, the excavator must be matched with enough trucks; a good excavator without sufficient hauling capacity will sit idle.

Practical points

• Ask for machine photos and hour-meter reading before dispatch.
• Agree clearly on attachments: bucket only or breaker included.
• Include lowbed cost if the machine will move more than once.
